Position Overview:
The Director of Development is a strategic leader responsible for advancing the mission of PHNTX through the development and execution of a comprehensive fundraising strategy. As PHNTX rebuilds its development team, this individual will play a key role in establishing and growing the department, building new processes, and leading a small, dynamic team. This role focuses on cultivating relationships with individual, corporate, and foundation donors, increasing annual revenue, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of PHNTX’s philanthropic support.The Director of Development reports to the Chief Marketing and Development Officer (CMDO) and collaborates with the Director of Marketing to align fundraising efforts with organizational messaging and outreach strategies. This position is also responsible for leading and managing the development team, ensuring accountability for fundraising targets and strategic goals.
Key Responsibilities:
Fundraising Strategy & Donor Cultivation- Lead the implementation of a comprehensive, multi-year fundraising strategy, incorporating annual giving, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, and planned-giving.
- Manage and cultivate relationships with donors at the $1,000+ level, including major gifts and corporate partners, to expand philanthropic support.
- Develop and oversee corporate sponsorships, donor events, and foundation grants, growing the organization’s donor base and securing sustainable funding sources.
- Regularly evaluate and refine fundraising approaches to maximize donor engagement and revenue growth.
- Work with the CMDO to engage board members and executive leadership in donor cultivation efforts, providing training and support to expand fundraising reach.
- Ensure progress toward revenue targets across individual, corporate, and foundation giving, reporting regularly to leadership.
- Establish and oversee a donor management system, ensuring accurate tracking, stewardship, and recognition of all donors.
- Implement best practices for donor stewardship, ensuring personalized engagement, timely acknowledgments, and impact reporting.
- Create and manage donor recognition programs to strengthen relationships with key supporters.
- Ensure that all fundraising activities comply with legal, ethical, and organizational guidelines.
- Work closely with the Director of Marketing to develop compelling fundraising campaigns, donor messaging, and engagement materials aligned with PHNTX’s mission.
- Partner with executive leadership and the board, providing regular fundraising updates and recommending adjustments to strategy as needed.
- Foster a collaborative environment across teams, ensuring alignment between fundraising, marketing, and community engagement efforts.
- Collaborate with the CMDO and finance team to reconcile fundraising revenue and expenses, assisting with financial reporting for internal and external stakeholders.
- Work alongside the CMDO to develop and manage the fundraising budget, ensuring strategic allocation of resources to meet revenue goals.
- Track and report on fundraising performance metrics, using data-driven insights to inform strategy.
- Partner with the CMDO to ensure philanthropic revenue aligns with overall organizational funding streams, identifying areas where fundraising fills critical service gaps.
- Support efforts to identify and steward private foundation donors in partnership with the CMDO and grant writer.
- Work with finance to ensure compliance with funding restrictions and reporting requirements for philanthropic and institutional grants.
- Act as a leader in the continued growth of the development team, ensuring effective recruitment, training, and retention of team members as the department evolves.
- Lead, manage, and hold accountable (LMA) the Development and Events Coordinator, fostering a results-driven and collaborative team culture.
- Establish new processes and operational efficiencies to strengthen the effectiveness of the development team.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Experience in corporate sponsorships, individual giving, and event management.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with experience building and growing a development team.
- Ability to engage with diverse donors and community partners, fostering strong, long-term relationships.
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills, with the ability to craft compelling donor messages.
- Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Proficiency in donor management systems and fundraising software (e.g., Bloomerang/QGIV, DonorPerfect, Salesforce).
- Experience with financial reporting and budget management for fundraising activities.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and lead cross-functional projects.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, business, marketing, nonprofit management, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience, with a proven track record of securing major gifts and building donor relationships.
- CFRE certification or equivalent experience preferred.
