General Description:

The Psychiatric Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner provides psychiatric clinical services for the Behavioral Health Department, including psychiatric evaluations, medication management, treatment planning, crisis and risk assessment, and follow-up care. The position collaborates with the Director of Behavioral Health, psychiatrists, primary care providers, nursing staff, behavioral health clinicians, case management, and community providers to ensure coordinated, patient-centered care consistent with the mission of Prism Health North Texas. The Psychiatric Physician Assistant/ Nurse Practitioner practices within the scope of licensure, applicable laws and regulations, organizational policies, and delegated authority while supporting the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based behavioral healthcare.

Specific Responsibilities of the Job:

 
  • Provides psychiatric clinical services including conducting psychiatric evaluations, obtaining psychiatric histories, performing mental status examinations, establishing diagnoses, ordering appropriate diagnostic tests, developing treatment plans, and providing medication management to ensure optimal patient care consistent with the mission of patient-centered care.
  • Performs suicide, homicide, and other behavioral health risk assessments and collaborates with the interdisciplinary care team to implement appropriate interventions, referrals, and follow-up care.
  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, behavioral health therapists, counselors, psychologists, case management, and community providers in coordinating patient care, educating patients and families, and promoting positive health outcomes.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and timely patient documentation to ensure coordinated service delivery, continuity of care, regulatory compliance, and effective communication among members of the healthcare team.
  • Identifies and analyzes patient flow and workflow related to Behavioral Health services and participates in initiatives that improve effectiveness, productivity, efficiency, and patient access
  • Remains current with developments, advancements, and best practices in psychiatric medicine through continuing education, professional organizations, required licensure, and other educational opportunities. 
  • Integrates acquired knowledge into daily practice.Participates in quality improvement initiatives, peer review activities, and other departmental projects designed to improve clinical quality, patient outcomes, and operational effectiveness.
  • Maintains knowledge of organizational policies, procedures, accreditation standards, federal and state regulations, and clinical practice guidelines applicable to psychiatric services.
  • Participate in staff meetings, committee activities, in-service education, and professional development activities as assigned.
  • Provides clinical education and serves as a resource to staff and may serve as a preceptor for Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner students and other advanced practice learners, when appropriate.
  • Works collaboratively with research staff in support of approved clinical research activities, when applicable.
  • Maintains positive and professional working relationships with providers, leadership, staff, hospitals, pharmacies, vendors, and community partners.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

 
  • High level of initiative and ability to coordinate patient services within an interdisciplinary behavioral healthcare environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining high-quality patient care.
  • Knowledge of psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management. and behavioral health services consistent with the Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner scope of practice.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with psychiatrists, behavioral health clinicians, medical providers, and support staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic health record systems.
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking, problem-solving, and crisis management skills.

Education and Experience:

 
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant program or accredited Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry required.
  • Current Texas Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner license in good standing required.
  • Current National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification required or Nurse Practitioner Certification in psychiatry.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Opportunity to obtain AAHIVM Specialist Certification within 18 months of hire.
  • Prescriptive authority in accordance with Texas law required.
  • Must maintain all required licensure, certifications, and clinical privileges throughout employment.  Master's degree in Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS), Masters of Nurse Practitioner in Psychiatry. Master of Health Science (MHS), Master of Medical Science (MMSc), or equivalent preferred
  • Previous experience in psychiatry or behavioral health preferred.
